The Tier-2/3 City Advantage Nobody Talks About

September 28, 2026

“Everybody is from the village, Shanaya. Your ancestors didn’t grow up beside Boojie Café in Bandra.”

If you know, you know. 😭

Somehow, growing up in a Tier-2 or Tier-3 city is treated like you spawned with a disadvantage.

But here’s the thing: your postcode might have taught you the exact skills entrepreneurship demands.

You learn to make things work.

Limited resources? You figure it out. Jugaad becomes creativity, problem-solving and doing more with less. Basically, entrepreneurship 101.

You become comfortable talking to people.

Neighbours, shopkeepers, teachers, family friends. You grow up interacting with people beyond your Instagram algorithm.

And if you’re building a business, knowing how to talk, listen and build trust matters more than having the fanciest pitch deck.

You learn to look for opportunities.

If something isn’t happening around you, you go looking for it. Competitions, internships, communities, mentors, funding opportunities. You learn not to wait for opportunity to knock.

You go find the door.

You learn to spot problems differently.

Being outside the biggest urban bubbles means you see problems that aren’t always obvious to everyone else.

And every entrepreneur knows: a problem nobody has solved yet is an opportunity waiting to be explored.

You learn to stand out.

In a smaller ecosystem, taking initiative can make you memorable. Start something, organise something, build something. Suddenly, you’re the person who did it.

That’s how networks and reputations begin.

You develop hunger.

Sometimes, seeing less makes you want to see more. One big event, campus or opportunity can turn “I want to do something big” into “I want to build something like that.”

And ambition is often where entrepreneurship starts.

And today, location isn’t the limit it used to be.

You can learn online, build globally, find co-founders anywhere, sell beyond your city and access opportunities that didn’t exist a decade ago.

So maybe growing up outside Mumbai, Delhi or Bangalore didn’t put you behind.

Maybe it taught you how to find the door instead of waiting for someone to open it.

Because your city can be Tier-2.

Your ambition, and your business, doesn’t have to be.
